A fantasy Japanese apartment interior: room shell modeled in Blender, set-dressed with library assets from NVIDIA and Sketchfab, then lit and rendered in USD Composer.

A small apartment interior that mixes traditional Japanese design with quiet fantasy touches like glowing lanterns. I built the room shell in Blender, set-dressed it in USD Composer with furniture and props from NVIDIA's asset library and Sketchfab, then handled materials, lighting, and rendering.

My Role

  • Planned the layout and modeled the room shell (walls, floors, and ceilings) in Blender.
  • Set-dressed every room with library assets from NVIDIA and Sketchfab, all credited below. I didn't model the furniture or props.
  • Assigned materials from NVIDIA's material library, lit each room, and rendered in USD Composer.

Artistic Vision

The aim was a calm, lived-in space: traditional Japanese architecture, clean lines, a muted palette, and natural materials like wood, paper, and stone, with small fantasy elements such as glowing lanterns.

Overall Layout

The apartment has three areas: an open living room and kitchen at the center, a bedroom tucked away for privacy, and a bathroom.

I modeled the shell (walls, floors, and ceilings) in Blender, keeping the footprint compact so each area flows into the next.

Furniture and Asset Placement

I brought the shell into USD Composer and set-dressed it with furniture and props from NVIDIA's asset library and Sketchfab, choosing pieces that fit both the Japanese style and the fantasy tone.

Textures and Materials

Materials came from NVIDIA's material library in USD Composer: wood grains, paper, stone finishes, and fabrics, applied across the scene.

Warm wood grain on the furniture, stone in the bathroom and kitchen, and softly glowing paper lanterns keep the palette natural, with a touch of fantasy.

Lighting

Lighting sets the mood room by room: overhead and accent lights in the living room and kitchen to pick out the wooden furniture and decor, softer and dimmer light in the bedroom and bathroom.

Render Settings in USD Composer

Final renders use USD Composer's real-time ray tracing and interactive path tracing, with settings balanced between image quality and render time.

Renders: Bedroom

Stone walls, a patterned blanket, and soft pillows keep the bedroom calm and warm.

A small desk lamp lights a work nook for reading or writing. A large window would bring in daylight; at night, the lamps carry the room.

A compact bathroom with a toilet, a sink and mirror, and a tub that doubles as a shower, finished in subtle stone with soft, warm light.

The open living room and kitchen center on a wooden dining table. Modern appliances (stove, sink, and refrigerator) sit in natural-finish wood cabinetry so they blend with the traditional style.
